Spring Has Sprung

It certainly has! As I write this my spring bulbs are blooming and all the perennials are coming out of dormancy. All this is at least one month ahead of schedule, which makes this gardening girl more than a little nervous.

I haven't yet been out plein air painting, but I have been biking and walking, soaking up the beauty of nature to bring back into my studio. Life has been busy with spring art shows and planning upcoming workshops, which I will share here with you. I have also taken 2 excellent workshops this spring. As a bonafide lifelong learner, I enjoy the challenge new techniques, painting methods and artistic visions bring, as well as the camaraderie of painting with other artists. They spur me on to be the most creative artist I can be, always testing my notions of why I paint, how to best express my artistry and what my paintings might become in the future. I am glad you are along for the ride!

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS AND CLASSES

I am excited to be teaching the ancient medium of encaustic painting at Swinton's Art Supply beginning in May. Encaustic painting is all the current rage, primarily as there are so many different ways the medium can be used, and with all the modern pigments and heat tools, the possibilities are endless and exciting. The one thing all styles require is the use of heat, called 'fusing' to make sure the multiple layers will not delaminate. Personally I work in both impressionism and abstraction, and encaustic is able to combine all of my skill set including drawing, painting, collage and mixed media. The first up is an ENCAUSTIC SAMPLER class on FRIDAY MAY 27 from 6-9pm. In this class we will be making 3 separate paintings to introduce students to some of the possibilities of the medium, as well as introduce the tools and materials needed. Following that, there will be a weekend INTRODUCTION TO ENCAUSTIC PAINTING PART 1 workshop on June 11-12, and INTRODUCTION TO ENCAUSTIC PAINTING PART 2 which will be held in August (dates TBA). Please contact Swinton's Art Supply for more information and to register. These classes have not been put up on the website yet, but they should be soon -you can call them to book your spot in the meantime!

July 25-28, 2016  ABSTRACTING THE LANDSCAPE

We will work from your photo reference or finished paintings and learn different methods of creating abstracted forms, each day working with one of the elements of design; predominantly shape, colour, and line. This workshop is geared to intermediate to advanced artists working in their established media. Students will be presented with the challenge to get to the heart of the landscape, to produce vibrant and expressive paintings.

GIBSON'S SCHOOL OF THE ARTS, Gibson's Landing, BC

Note: THIS WORKSHOP IS CURRENTLY FULL but there is a wait list is you are interested.

UPCOMING SHOWS

I am thrilled to be participating once again in the spring Calyx Distinctive Arts show. This year I will be ONLY on Saturday April 23 , from 10-4pm with more than 30 of my latest creations. If you haven't attended this show before, it is a MUST SEE, with fine art and fine crafts and different artists each day, it is an extravaganza of beauty!

I will also be participating in the FCA's Absolutely Art show at Haysboro Community Hall. I was happy to have won an honorable mention award at the Edgemont show, so my painting is on the postcard for this show (bottom right).

As well, my work can always be seen at the following galleries:

Just Imajan Gallery, Cochrane

Evanescence Gallery, High River

Palliser Art & Framing, Calgary

Leighton Art Centre, outside Calgary

Centre d'Arts Visuels, Edmonton

I hope that you will enjoy this beautiful spring weather, and take in an art show or workshop to inspire your own creativity!

Blessings
