Spring 2017

Spring is finally here!!

Despite the snow that was on the ground this morning, my garden is popping up spring blooms and the trees are in bud. I just love the sense of hope and new life that this season brings with it. Pretty soon it will be plein air painting season again, but for now I have been continuing my work with the figure from life and am taking an excellent online portraiture class. Don't ask me where this might lead, but it is always invigorating to take a new turn in either subject or media (or both!). It consistently leads to new artistic growth that carries over into all the other ways of painting that I already do. I am not yet ready to unveil the work I am doing, but you will be the first to see it when I do!

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS AND CLASSES

The last "Introduction to Encaustic Painting" workshop at Swinton's did not run, so it has been rescheduled for May 13 & 14. I have also changed the Studio Class to run on Saturday June 3 from 10-4:30. I am hopeful that a one day class may meet your needs better. This class allows an opportunity for you to work on your own projects with your own materials, with my help. It is like having a private lesson!  Each artist will have their own station with griddle and heat gun, an almost unheard of thing. Please call Swinton's to register at 403-258-3500.

I am also planning on hosting Plein Air dates in June, July and August. Possible dates are June 10 or 24, July 8 or 15, and August 5 or 26th. The cost is $150 per person. These will be small classes that will run with as many or as few people that are interested, and we will go to beautiful locations around the Calgary area. If you are interested in attending, PLEASE email me with your preferred dates and I will put you on the list! No commitment is required at this point.

The painting at the top of this newsletter is "On Blueberry Island", 12x12" plein air oil on board. It was painted at my cottage last summer while we were on a picnic.

UPCOMING SHOWS

I would like to invite you to come to the Federation Of Canadian Artists juried show on May 26 & 27 at the EArl Grey Golf Club. Having the show being open on Friday night is a new idea that we hope will better accommodate busy schedules!  I think you will find this a wonderful exhibition of some of the most talented artists this city has to offer, and I hope to see you there.

I am thrilled to once again be chosen to participate in this spring's Calyx Distinctive Arts event. This year I will be showing ONLY on Saturday April 22 from 10-4pm with 30 of my latest creations, most having never been seen before. I will also have a small box of unframed paintings available that are gift priced. If you haven't attended this 'happening' before, it is a must see event with fine art and fine crafts by different artists each day. It is truly an extravaganza of beauty and a treat for the eye. Free admission, plenty of free parking, great door prizes, all artists are in attendance, and no purchase is necessary!

NEW GALLERY OPPORTUNITY

There is a new gallery concept in town! Art on 9th, is in the heart of Inglewood on 9th Avenue between 12th and 13th Streets. It is a concept created by artists for artists and offers artists a chance to be part of a revolving 2 month exhibition schedule. I have been asked to participate in this July and August's show and I am really excited by the possibilities. I hope that you will pop by sometime this summer and enjoy all the beautiful art!

As well, my work can always be seen at the following galleries:
Just Imajan Gallery, Cochrane
Evanescence Gallery, High River
Palliser Art & Framing, Calgary
Leighton Art Centre, outside Calgary
Centre d'Arts Visuels, Edmonton

As an aside, I am coordinating a wonderful woman's event at our church this October that I wanted to tell you about! Pink Impact 2017 is a broadcast of the fabulous event that is taking place in Texas this May, bringing world renowned Christian speakers to our own community. Tickets are available online. Please mark it on your calendars and spread the information around if you are interested!

I hope that this spring brings you tons of joy and opens your lives to new possibility! Take your eyes off the terrible things that are going on in the world for a moment, and enjoy our abundantly blessed lives here in Canada.

Wishing you and yours a happy Easter
In love
Sharon
