Spring 2019 Newsletter

Take Me Away.jpg

Welcome to Spring!

I hope that it will stay, but I have lived in Calgary long enough to know not to trust it!. I had a lovely winter; skiing (downhill and cross-country), skating, and long walks in the quiet of the winter forest. Winter is usually a time of hibernation for me, but this year I have been hard at work in my studio getting ready for my seventh solo art show! All of this work will be revealed from April 2-27th at Framed on Fifth Art Gallery. (1207-5th Ave NW) The opening is on Friday April 5th from 6-9pm, and I would be DELIGHTED if you would join me in celebration. I will also be doing a demonstration at the gallery on Friday April 12 from 1-3pm if you are interested in seeing my process. I told you about the development of this work in my last newsletter, which you can find here if you would like to be reminded. I will have over 25 new pieces on display. My darling hubby, Dave, has hand crafted all the frames for my work, and I think they make everything look smashing! My artist statement for the show gives a glimpse into my studio:

“Free To Be Me!”

Isn’t that a crazy name for my 7th solo show?. I have been searching for its name for a while, but today it hit me! I have been making all this new work for my show, but rather than a cohesive whole where all the paintings resemble each other,  the body of work seemed to separate itself into 3 varying degrees of abstraction: From extremely abstracted to much more representational, yet never going all the way to non-objective or realism. All the work is about the landscape that I love and live in, but just like the weather changes, so does my mood and desire. I have long resisted being pigeonholed into only one style, believing it to be the doom of a creative soul. I have fretted about it, threatened to tear up all my work and rip out all my hair, but I am coming to understand that this is who I have been created to be; fashioned unlike any other; meant to shine with my own Light. So I present to you my efforts and hope that you feel the joy and pleasure I feel when I am lost in my own little world in my studio. Welcome in my friend.

ADDITIONAL UPCOMING SHOWS

I am thrilled to be participating once again in the spring Calyx Distinctive Arts show. This year I will be ONLY on Saturday April 27th from 10-4pm.  If you haven't attended this show before, it is a MUST SEE, with fine art and fine crafts and different artists each day, it is an extravaganza of beauty!

As well I hope to be participating in the Leighton Art Centre's Annual Juried Member's Show April 20-June 2nd; as well as the Annual Clothesline Show and Sale on June 1 & 2. The later is an excellent way to pick up some fantastic unframed work and stellar prices!
